  A Guide to Writing Systems

Omniglot.com has a fount of material on such subjects as What is Writing, Alphabetic Writing Systems and Undeciphered Writing Systems. For artists who use text in their work, this whole site should prove fascinating, but for those particularly interested in shapes and forms created primarily for functional purposes but which stand on their own as aesthetic objects, the section on Alternative writing systems should provide a lot of source material.
